Royal Review

About Us
The Royal Review is a magazine united; fortified by the hands of El Camino’s most creative visionaries. Whether through poetry, storytelling, music, or visual art, the Royal Review offers a place where students can be something more.
Our Purpose
To unify students through all forms of artistic mediums. To give aspiring minds a platform to express themselves. To read, write, create, and appreciate everything that makes us human.
What We’re Looking For
We seek beautiful and artistic interpretations of what it means to live. We want to see the perspectives, themes, and ideas that matter to ECR students. Our goal is to curate a magazine where imagination can call home.
ART
We accept both 2D and 3D visual art. You may submit up to six pieces per submission.
Please submit a well-lit, high-resolution PNG or JPEG file of your work. Portrait orientation is generally preferred for 2D works, but not required. Include the title in the file name, but do not include your name on the artwork itself or in the file name, as all submissions are reviewed anonymously.
When photographing your work, take your photo near a window and try to keep the lighting even. Avoid glare of shadows, and hold your camera parallel to the piece to prevent distortion. Most modern phones will be sufficient - just make sure the image is clear and in focus. Do make sure your piece fills the frame as much as possible.
For performance art such as dance, music, theater, or film, please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We'll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work.
Poetry
We accept all forms of poetry (in any language: translations required), and we especially welcome experimental and genre-blurring work. There is no line limit, and you may submit up to six poems per submission.
Each poem should be uploaded as a separate Google Doc, with Times New Roman font and double spacing (unless it is a visual poem and a specific font/format is significant to the piece).
Include the title and genre in the file name and at the top of the document. Do not include your name within the document or in the file name, as all submissions are reviewed anonymously.
If you would like to submit a themed collection, please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We'll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work.
Prose
We accept flash fiction, short stories, memoirs, essays, and journalism. You may submit up to three pieces per submission. Follow the same formatting file guidelines as poetry.
Flash fiction should not exceed 750 words. Short stories must range from 750 to 3,500 words: Memoirs and essays may be up to 2,000 words.
Journalism submissions may be up to 4,000 words, and any interview transcripts are required at the bottom of the document. We encourage in-depth coverage, and if word count is a concern for journalism submissions, please email us. (Cannot have previously published in the yearbook or Royal Courier)
If you would like to submit another form of prose (critical essay, drama, translation, etc.), please email us first with details about your proposed submission. We'll provide tailored guidelines and are happy to consider your work.
