Athletics: Requirements & Registration

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is the governing body that oversees college sports in the United States, setting rules and standards for athletic programs at universities and colleges. For high school student-athletes, the NCAA is especially important because it provides the framework for transitioning from high school sports to college athletics. It establishes eligibility requirements—such as academic standards and amateur status rules—that athletes must meet in order to compete at the collegiate level. The NCAA also offers scholarships and opportunities that allow student-athletes to pursue both their academic and athletic goals, making it a vital resource for anyone aiming to continue their sports career beyond high school.

To help students navigate this process, the NCAA offers the Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete (CBSA), a comprehensive resource for students, families, counselors, and coaches. This guide explains the NCAA’s initial-eligibility process and how to successfully transition to becoming an NCAA student-athlete. The NCAA Eligibility Center—formerly known as the Clearinghouse—reviews academic records, test scores, and amateur status to determine if athletes can compete at NCAA Division I or II schools. Because the clearance process can take up to six months, it’s essential to register early to ensure eligibility before competition begins.
